Advent Study: He Is Faithful: Being anointed with the Spirit

READ: Isaiah 11:2; 42:1; 61:1;  Matthew 3:16; John 3:34

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, in order that by the power of the Holy Spirit you might abound in hope.” { Romans 15:13 }

By the power of the Holy Spirit.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved {Rom 10:9} and bonus you are filled with the Holy Spirit.  As it is written in Isaiah 44, “For I will pour water {Holy Spirit} upon your offspring.”  In the same way that water refreshes, cleanses and makes fruitful the earth so does the Holy Spirit benefit the faithful believer.

“And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” { 2 Corinthians 1:21 }

We need hope to thrive.  Hope in God, ultimately. But do you ever think about how important hope is in your life or how often you are encouraged by hope in simple things?   Hope gives way to perseverance. It wraps up or difficulties and reminds us there is an end. On the eve of a big vacation or simply on a Thursday night there isn’t much that can rain on our parade. Right? The hopeful anticipation of a joy filled vacation, or a fast approaching weekend of fun and relaxation, keeps your spirits up. It’s the hope of fun, rest or the freedom to do whatever we want for two whole days. It’s the hope in something good just around the corner.

In the same way, when we are reminded of the hope we have in the Lord and His promises we are filled with the burden lifting blessings of joy and love.  A joy that is unexplainable, accompanied by a peace that surpasses all understanding, and a love overflowing in our hearts from the inpouring of love from God.

So how do you maintain a constant surge of hope flowing through your life?

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” {Romans 15:4}

Hope abounds in our lives when we meditate day and night on the promises of God.  When we regularly breathe in His word and allow it to wash over our lives, it is then that we are filled to overflowing with the hope, joy, and love of God.  And our goal is to be so filled on a regular basis that our love and joy spills over onto others for the Glory of God. This is the true and faithful circle of life.

It’s no surprise to me how perfectly timed this season, wrapped in the hope of Jesus, comes at the end of the year. At a pivotal reflective time of the year that can bring with it discouragement from unmet expectations or goals that just didn’t quite make it to completion. This season picks us up and reminds us of the hope we have in Jesus and our eternal blessing that is our ultimate aim in life. And just as our daily quiet time serves as a renewal of hope each day, and our weekend service at church renews us weekly, let’s allow this season to be for us the end of the year revival of hope and a great Gospel surge catapulting us into the new year armed with more Peace, Joy, and Love of the Lord rooted in a heart bursting with hope for all that the Lord has promised us to come!

May you be blessed this season with a renewal of hope and be encouraged in all that the Lord is doing and will do in your life!

Believe it! Trust it! Live it!
  • What steps can you take today to be renewed in the hope of Lord to help you in your daily life?
  • When you press into the Lord on a regular basis how have you experienced more joy, love, and peace in your life?

Lord, thank you for your hope. A hope that doesn’t disappoint and a hope that allows us to rise above our difficulties and fills us with your Holy Spirit helper who arms us with more joy, peace, and love.  May we be lifted up and reminded to press into your Word every day for its encouragement for our faith in you daily! ~ Amen.
