The Good Fight. { Day 12 }

READ: 1 Timothy 6:11-21

“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” {1 Timothy 6:11-21 ESV}

I am a peacemaker. I hate conflict and fighting, I turn my head watching the bloody mess in action movies. Fists and swords turn my head, but even this softy knows there are some things that are worth fighting for. There is a kind of fight that is good, one that has nothing to do with verbally sparing with someone in a heated debate about differing opinions. It’s much bigger than offenses and opinions because the target the enemy is aiming for is our soul. Something so important demands a readiness and alertness to see the snares of the enemy.

The passionate pursuit of the eternal over the temporary, sinful, and fleeting will always be our most important battle.

Right after Paul gives Timothy a warning that the love of money is the root of all evil in verse 20, he tells Timothy that action has to happen. Timothy will have to flee and run from this trap to purse righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. We see the sweetest, strongest, most powerful fruits of the Spirit are the things we must pursue.

Fighting the good fight of faith requires boldness and taking hold of the eternal life to which we were called. Click To Tweet

We run, not in fear, but because we are faithful to flee from temptation and run towards something that will require every ounce of spiritual stamina. When my daughter was little, and probably in timeout for the hundredth time, she told me she wanted to run away. But, later that day she told me that God told her to run to me, not away from me. Those words out of my six-year-old were profound and still move me to tears when I think about it today. Our faith journey is much the same, we run towards God and his plan for our life and we run from the things that harm us and trip us up spiritually.

We know this fight is not going to be easy, but we believe that it is good and worth fighting for. The pursuit of righteous is a lifelong marathon in one direction. Moment-by-moment we pound the pavement as runners in pursuit of the prize waiting for us in the eternal. The beauty of fighting the good fight is in knowing that we are not alone in this fight, we have the help of the Holy Spirit and a community of believers and friends who are running with us.

REFLECT:

  • Are you weary today from fighting the good fight?
  • What is something that you need to “run” from today that might be tripping you up spiritually?
  • When you think about righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness…what are you needing more of from God.

PRAYER:

Lord, help us today to fight the good fight, strengthen us in the areas that we might feel weak. We want to run towards your goodness, not away from it. We long to pursue godliness and see a breakthrough in this area. Give us faith to press on. Give us love and gentleness when are faced with challenges in our relationships. And patience with ourselves and others when we fall short. In Jesus Name, Amen
