Hardship should drive us to God

“But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.” {Psalms 3:2-4, ESV}

To be in the throes of hardship is never fun.

When King David coined those faithful words in Psalms he was in the middle of some serious family drama.  His son, Absalom had conspired against him. {You can read more about that story in 2 Samuel 15}  David, as a parent not wanting harm to come to his child, even when that child was trying to hurt him and while continuing to hold fast to God and his word, David prayed.

In a moment that I’m sure was wrecked with fear and uncertainty; fear for himself and for his son and overwhelmed with the “what if’s” in their situation, David chose to keep his mind fixed on the Lord and in the peaceful trust of the His faithfulness, he sought the Lord.

“True Christian fortitude consist more in gracious security and serenity of mind, in patiently bearing and patiently waiting, then daring enterprises with the sword.” Matthew Henry

We have no guarantees in life when it comes to knowing how our circumstances will turn out, however, we do have the assuredness in the Lord through His Word that He will supply peace and a shield around us when we put our trust in Him.

It can be really easy to react, fight back, seek our own solution and force our own will into our situations and while that will keep us busy doing and our minds filled with accomplishment it will never compare to the unsurpassed peace that comes when we seek God first for all things and put our whole trust in Him!

May God be the lifter of your head today, the shield about you, and the peace within you, as you go about your day.  To Him be the Glory forever and ever! Amen.
