{More Jesus} Good and Perfect Gift.

Lent Study: More Jesus.

READ: JAMES 1

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” {James 1:17, ESV}

We have entered into the Lenten season, one of my favorite seasons of the whole year.  And we are kicking it off our new online study with the focus being simply, More Jesus. I could use more Jesus infiltrating every nook and cranny of my life, how about you? I love this season from Ash Wednesday to Easter for the opportunity it provides us to slow down and simply focus on Jesus. Who He is, His sacrifice for us, and being reminded of who we are in Him!

How fitting for this season to kick things off with a deep dive into Jesus in our trials.  It’s in the trials of life I either feel the depth of closeness or the greatest distance from God.

I don’t know about you but when I am knee deep in the struggles of life, I have a hard time seeing it as a good thing. Harder yet, rejoicing. And yet, we learn in James to count it all joy when we face trials.  Why? When we are hard pressed on every side but remain steadfast in our trust of the Lord, we open the floodgates of our hearts to the good and perfect gifts of God.  And when we have that first-hand experience of God through our trials, our faith in Him grows. It’s in believing, trusting, and living out of God’s truth we are strengthened in our faith.

Our good and perfect gift flows out from a God-centered perspective through our trials. Click To Tweet

Our perspective and where we put our focus in the midst of the trial has the ability to breath life and add blessing into our lives. Do we see our trial as something terrible that is happening to us or do we see the faithfulness of God getting us through it? It’s in the trials of life where we really get to exercise our faith and reap the blessings only God can provide when we wholeheartedly trust Him every step of the way.

When I get out of the thick of the hard spaces and pan back 200 feet for the bird’s eye view of my life, I can focus on the bigger picture. Sometimes in the weeds, all we can see is the ugly.  Our perspective is limited because our visibility is narrow. But one thing remains true in the bird’s eye view or in the thick of the weeds, God never changes. He is true, good and faithful in it all.

God never changes!  It’s in living out of the truth of His unchanging faithfulness where we receive blessing upon blessing. Peace in His faithfulness and joy in the victory, every time.

It can be difficult to comprehend the unchanging nature of God in a world full of uncertainty.  However, I recently read an analogy that helped me understand it a little better and I hope it helps you too.  It went a little something like this (Paraphrased): “The sun remains the same in it’s rising and setting and effect each day, however, the earth and its clouds can make it seem to us as though it changes, right? Just like the clouds can come in front of the sun and change its appearance so can our perspective around a situation in our life hinder our faith in God.” Our trust in God weavers when we put anything before Him in our lives.

When we put more of an emphasis on the trial instead of the faithfulness of God, hardship wins. Likewise, when we keep our steadfast gaze on God, trusting and unmoved by what is happening, we walk in our good and perfect gift and receive our promised crown of life.

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him.” {James 1:12, ESV}

May your sight be set to the faithfulness of God in every situation of your life!

REFLECT:

  • How has Jesus met you in a difficult season of your life?
  • How would you like to see more Jesus in your life?  Let’s ask Him specifically for what we want.
  • Our trials can sometimes be a one-time thing or for a moment, and still other times our trials can come from a recurring place in our lives. Is there anything you would like to see a spiritual breakthrough in your life?

PRAYER:

Spirit of God fall afresh on your daughters today. Bring a right perspective on our circumstances and align our hearts with your truth today. May we be encouraged in our hearts and mind to trust you more for our whole life.Thank you Lord for your steadfast and unchanging faithfulness! Amen.
