JOHN | Be unbound. { DAY ELEVEN }

“Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” {John 11:38-39, ESV}

It’s too late! Have you had that thought before? Or maybe you’ve thought….

The moment has come and gone”.

“It will never happen now”.

“I’ve missed my window of opportunity”.

Oh, man, do I have missed opportunities or things hoped for long past what feels like that proverbial ask and receive allotment of time. And when what feels like those missed opportunities come and go it can be real easy to look back with disappointment or regret. It can bring sadness, despair, and questions…”Why didn’t I deserve what I had hoped and prayed for?” In those times we can question our faith or even the character of God.  And maybe not His whole character, just His disposition towards us.

God may be great but He’s just not great to me.

Martha and Mary sent for their friend, Jesus, while Lazarus was only ill.  They hadn’t requested a stranger or just any medicine man to come and help.  They requested their friend. A man they had broke bread and communed with.  A man they knew and a man who cared for them.

“This illness does not lead to death.  It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” {John 11:4, ESV}

What if our missed opportunity is really a greater opportunity for God to bless and be glorified? Click To Tweet

A physical blessing or provision is wonderful but the gift of faith is priceless.  Christ could have moved mountains and parted some seas to come to Lazarus’ bedside right away.  He could have even waved His hand from a distance or even breathed out “arise” and Lazarus would have been made well. But He chose to wait and wait past any humanistic possibility of healing.  Lazarus was dead, bound, and buried.

Jesus waited so that the power and glory of God might be displayed in such a way that we would know and believe that He is the Son of God.  He waited so that our faith might be perfected.  He waited because He loves us!

“Unbind him, and let him go.” {John 11:44}

Is there anything you have prayed and are left waiting for?  Waiting and wondering have the opportunities come and gone? Or maybe feeling like God just isn’t hearing your prayers? It’s impossible to be bound to the truths of God and the lies of the enemy at the same time.  I believe today’s Scripture is an opportunity to be unbound to any thought, belief or habit that isn’t from God.

Be unbound.

Be unbound to the lie that God doesn’t hear you!  He does!  He hears your prayers, He is listening!

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.” {1 John 5:14}

Be unbound to the lie that it’s too late! God isn’t tied to time, to circumstances, or to anything that seems logical, realistic, or possible to us!

“For everything, there is a season, and a time for every matter under the heaven;…He has made everything beautiful in its time.” {Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11}

Be unbound to the lie that God doesn’t care about you!

“O Lord, You have looked through me and have known me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You understand my thoughts from far away. You look over my path and my lying down. You know all my ways very well. Even before I speak a word, O Lord, You know it all. You have closed me in from behind and in front. And You have laid Your hand upon me. All You know is too great for me. It is too much for me to understand.He is a God who is above it all and reigns over everything!” {Psalms 139:1-6}

Maybe this time of waiting is really just a beautiful time that God, in His great love for you, is using to increase your faith and prepare you for His immeasurably more!

  • Is there anything you are bound to over the truths of God?
  • When you find yourself in a season of waiting, what encouragement can you take from today’s Scripture?
  • The Lord cares for you, take a few minutes to reflect on the care He has had on your life recently. Document it and pray over it.
