JOSHUA: SUN STOP! {DAY 10}

JOSHUA DAY 10READ: JOSHUA 9 & 10, Psalms 15:4

Have you ever wanted to shout to the sun — “Sun Stop!”  I can’t tell you how many times over the past couple years where this has been an insatiable urge for me!  Sun please stop rising and setting at such a rapid pace, I can’t catch up!  The days roll by at lightning speed and before I know it —  Monday turns into Friday and January into December.  I find myself overwhelmed!

Time. It doesn’t always cooperate with our schedules, does it? And that old saying ‘the older you get the faster it goes’ — ain’t no joke either!

On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel:

“Sun, stand still over Gibeon,
    and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
 So the sun stood still,
    and the moon stopped,
    till the nation avenged itself on its enemies,

as it is written in the Book of Jashar.

The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!  {Joshua 10:12-14, ESV}

The Lord stopped the sun for a whole day so that Joshua and his men could conquer the cities. Pretty radical and although it might seem crazy to ask for this, I would be lying if I didn’t believe that God has stopped the clock for me from time to time.  It might not look like the sun literally hanging out in the sky a bit longer but instead it’s that mile-long to-do-list that gets accomplished in what seems like an unbelievable short time! Nothing is impossible for God, not even time!

When time seems to be in short supply, I’ve learned to breath out “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under the sun” {Ecclesiastes 3:1} — God knows what needs to get done. And he desires to co-labor with us to get it done. For Joshua, that meant holding the sun still in the sky for a whole day — for us it might look a little different. Regardless, God is on our side and when we trust him with our time, what God wills gets accomplished! Believe it!

Not only is it amazing that God stopped the sun, He did that for Joshua after he made an unfavorable alliance, one he shouldn’t have made.

There are so many great key learnings in today’s reading but three distinct points I want to make certain to draw attention too.   First, be careful who you make alliances with.  Second, when we have a victory in one area of our life, suddenly the enemy will come at us with a different tactic. and Third, God wants to co-labor with us – let’s let Him! ~ Amen.

When the visitors from Hivites came to Joshua under the guise of people from a far off land. Joshua, full of confidence from his recent victory at Ai, didn’t seek the Lord for guidance and made an alliance against the will of God. He made an oath that he would now have to uphold. Joshua’s victory in war shadowed him from the very tranquil and deceitful visitors.

“He who swears to his own hurt and does not change” {Psalms 15:4, ESV}

The enemy is tricky, just when we gain victory in one area of our life, he will come at us in a new and cunning way to try and trip us up.  We need to be on guard, watchful and ready for this.  It’s so easy to get puffed up when things are going well but as we have learned in the previous chapter even{here},  it’s at those mountaintop moments when we have the furthest to fall. I don’t believe in fearful living, waiting for the ball to drop or watchful and on high alert for disaster so we can avoid it — But instead putting tools and practices in place to help us follow the Lord with more vigilance and ease every day.

The Lord desires to co-labor with us.  Not to be a hinderance but to be a help in everything and everyday.  I firmly believe that when we sit before the Lord each morning, reading our bible, praying, and offering up our day to the Lord — asking Him for our Daily Bread. He meets us and gives us everything we need to get through the day.  If it’s the “sun stop” moments or something else, God wants to help us. He wants to hold us up, bear our burdens, and ease our troubles. He wants to sing with us on those mountaintops and dance in the valleys of our lives.

I pray that in every day you long for — In the morning give me Jesus!

believe it trust it live it

MEMORY VERSE: “The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.” {Joshua 10:13-14, ESV}
