Joshua Day 11

I could not have more balls in the air right now. And my juggle is not one I would ever showcase in the Circus! I’m smack dab in the middle of a very hectic season of life, where I find myself scrambling to manage work, writing, relationships, and many more of life’s tedious responsibilities. Despite every effort to handle each day well and with care, things just don’t seem to come together smoothly, there are hick-ups at every corner.  I’ll tackle one problem and another one is roaring before the first is complete.

I often feel very undone in this season.

In the day to day scramble, I wonder if I’ll ever really complete anything well.  The truth is that I do, but when so many things play out like a chaotic  ‘who’s on first’ comedy act, it doesn’t feel like a ‘finish well’ is going to happening.

As the the battle to conquer the Promised Land continues for Joshua in today’s text, I’m sure there were many moments of uncertainty over the 20 year battle of Northern Canaan but God brought them through. And didn’t just give them the win, God faithfully gave them COMPLETE annihilation.

“…he left none remaining.” Joshua 11:8

“…there was none left that breathed.” Joshua 11:11

“All the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took their plunder.” Joshua 11:14

“…so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.” Joshua 11:15b

“There was none of the Anakim left in the land…” Joshua 11:22

I am constantly amazed at God’s faithfulness.  This story is no exception.  God promised Joshua and all the men of valor victory over their enemies.  God didn’t just give them victory, He gave them COMPLETE victory!

As I’m reading today’s scripture and reflecting on my own life and current chaos; I am so encouraged by the resounding faithfulness of God to bring them to such an unabridged finish.  He didn’t just lead them to complete what they started but lead them to finish completely what they started!

Scripture tells us that we are living in a battle field.  That the “enemy prowls around like a lion ready to devour” {1 Peter 5:8} and “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” {Ephesians 6:12}

Yes, sometimes life is just difficult; littered with struggles and hurdles to jump over all the time. And because of that, I believe it would be like gilding the lilly to give the enemy too much credit for all of life’s folly.  But as believers, we also know that we have an enemy that would love nothing more then to pull at our attention and separate us from all God is doing in and around us.  A little mishap here, a missed appointment there, an undue argument with a friend, and suddenly there is cause or opportunity to distract us from Christ and center too much focus on our problems.

But we know that even in struggles or missed appointments, God works on our behalf when we trust Him!

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” {Romans 8:28, ESV}

Friends, life is messy! I’m learning to love the mess the older I get.  It’s in the mess that I get to see God’s incredible sovereignty over everything. My veil of independence get’s ripped to shreds when I come face to face with the knowledge that I can’t do everything myself, I need God. Whether you are in a mess, have everything in perfect order, or maybe you have a few balls in the air like me?  God’s got the finish-line all mapped out.  It is so encouraging to know that God is going to bring all He is doing in our lives to a complete and victorious finish! {Truthfully, He already has.}

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” {Philippians 1:6, ESV}

Believe it! – that God has victory for you!

Trust it! –  that victory and a full & complete finish is yours, if you simply believe God for all He is. is doing. and will do. in our life.

Live it!  – walk out in the truth and understanding that victory is yours, allow this truth to permeate in every crevice of your life and change the way you make decisions and respond to all that life throws at you!
