READ: RUTH 2:1-16, LEVITICUS 19:9-10; 23:22, DEUTERONOMY 24:21

“So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelch.” {Ruth 2:3, ESV}

Our small steady acts of faithfulness matter to God.

This is a beautiful section in the story of Ruth.  From the ‘Lord bless you’s spoken, to God’s faithfulness and favor found throughout.  This story has completely captivated me.

As I read today’s passage, the word “happened” glaringly stands out.  In all the death and upheaval Naomi and Ruth had faced up until this point, Ruth just happens to find herself gleaning in the field of a family member, who just happens to be someone who can change both her and Naomi’s life forever, a man who would become her guardian redeemer. What?, that’s crazy.

That seems to be a pretty big fortunate accident, don’t you think?

But, is there such a thing as coincidence with God?  A coincidence means “a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection” taken from William-Webster. In short, a fortunate accident.  But God doesn’t deal in accidents, right? He works all things out.  All things! Not just some of the things but the Lord works all things out.

Ruth gleaning in a field of a family member was anything but a coincident!  God was perfectly designing their redemptive love story down to the itty-bitty detail.  And just like Ruth didn’t just “happen” to land herself in the right field, at the right time, neither do we! ~ Amen.

What may feel rather happenstance to us in life, is pure providence with God.

Beloved, our small steady acts of  faithfulness have a greater impact in the Kingdom of Heaven.  When we lean into the Lord and remain faithful, we can stand with full absurdness and confidence in the truth that the Lord is working ALL things out.  When things don’t make sense or feel accidental, we just need to press into the One who is never accidental!

Believe It! – God works all things together for good for those who love Him.

Trust It! – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” {Romans 8:28, ESV}  Nothing is happenstance when we are walking with the Lord.  Trust it.

Live It! – Sin happens.  And we may need to take some time to confess and make right our part in the things happening that we just don’t understand.  But once we cleanse our heart, trust that the Lord will work everything out for those who love Him.  Pray, confess, and walk in faithfulness and trust the Lord is in the happenstance and explainable moments of your life.  And He’s got something really amazing in the works for you!
