UNSTOPPABLE GOSPEL: ALL WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

UNSTOPPABLE GOSPEL: THEY WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

UNSTOPPABLE GOSPEL: Allowing The Inexorable Truth Set You Free!

READ: ACTS 2:1-47

“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” {Acts 2:4}

The Holy Spirit brings power in the gales of life, unites hearts in one accord, and ushers conviction that paves way for His comfort.

“Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there am I among them” {Matthew 18:20} says the Lord.  As chapter two opens, we see the disciples gathered together in one place.  It’s believed they were together praying and worshipping.  If you remember, Jesus asked them to wait in Jerusalem {Acts 1:4-5} for their baptism no longer with water but the Spirit.

I just love the obedience this displayed.  If I had just spent 40 days with the risen Christ and witnessed all the miracles done before, I think I would be leaping out of my skin with excitement, and the doer in me would want to be out telling people.   Sharing all I had witnessed and the blessing of Jesus to whoever would listen.

But the disciples did exactly what the Lord asked them to do, “Wait!”

“And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.” {Acts 2:2}

A mighty rushing wind signifies the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. And the power of the Spirit at work throughout the whole world. Not only is wind strong and able to take down things in it’s path; wind carries.  To me, visualizing the gospel being spread across the earth like a mighty wind carrying it from one continent to the next is breathtakingly beautiful and makes something that can often feel impossible, completely conceivable.  As you meditate on the Holy Spirit, think about it’s power like a mighty wind in your life, and allow it to carry you through all life’s circumstances with bountiful direction and purpose.

“Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.” {Acts 2:5}

The Holy Spirit unites us in one accord. We are not the first people to experience prejudice, color lines, and dissension amongst people groups.  Sometimes I feel like we are back sliding further and further into partiality with many of the new state and federal laws around marriage and family and those affecting our children in schools. However, even back in Acts we see great division amongst the people.

As the Holy Spirit fell on them they began to speak in tongues {language of the Holy Spirit} and they were able to understand each others native languages.  The Spirit brought redemption to the curse at the ‘Tower of Babel’ and united the believers together.

I’ve had an opportunity to live in other countries, and while I am terrible at learning languages, one thing I love more than anything is worshipping with people from all around the world.  Combining nations, languages, and cultures into one worship service has allowed me to get maybe just a glimpse of what this might have been like.  As we sing songs in our native tongue, the Holy Spirit binds our hearts in one accord worshipping together.

The Holy Spirit makes away for His comfort.  I don’t know anything that makes me more uncomfortable than not understanding what is going on in my life.  To walk in uncertainty uneases my mind and brings immense restlessness.

“And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.” {Acts 2:6}

Later in the chapter we see how the onlookers {unbelievers} interrupted what was happening as drunkenness but the believers were comforted by understanding in the Spirit. They knew they could hear and understand one another.  The Holy Spirit brought wisdom and understanding and in so doing brought comfort.

When I press into the Holy Spirit for wisdom in my life, I am comforted.  Not just once in a while but every time.  I may not alway receive the answers I hoped for but I am always given peace.

As you seek the Lord in your daily quiet times and this study of the Book of Acts, may you see all the more the great power, comfort and blessing of the Holy Spirit in your life!

How have you witnessed the Holy Spirit move powerfully in your life?

Take a minute to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to bring comfort, wisdom, or His power for a situation or circumstance in your life?

What is one way you can start to incorporate more of the Holy Spirit into your everyday life?

One thing I’ve done is write HOLY SPIRIT on 3×5 cards and placed it strategically in my home, car, and office to remind me to pray and seek the Holy Spirit more each day.

WORSHIP

“And in the last days it shall be, God declares,

That I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams;

even on my male servants and female servants

in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below.” {Acts 2:17-19}
