Unstoppable Gospel:

UNSTOPPABLE GOSPEL: Allowing The Inexorable Truth Set You Free!

“It is not for you to know times or season that the Father has fixed by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” {Acts1:8, ESV}

Do you get overwhelmed by the clock? Time is a big deal to me and something I think about often.  I’m antsy in the waiting, dislike feeling rushed, and worry when things take longer than I expected.   I plan my days and minutes around the ticker.  Often wishing I had more of that valuable resource while asking the question, “how can I get accomplished what needs to be done in less time, so I can make more time for other things?”

Jesus spent forty days with the disciples after he rose from the dead and before he ascended into heaven.  I can’t even begin to imagine what that might have been like to spend all that time with Jesus and at that moment.  Did time stop for the disciples as they sat and marveled in the company of our Savior?  Was Jesus still human or fully God during those days? Would he need to eat or go to the bathroom? If he ate, what would they eat together? Did they sleep, or was it just one forty day sleepless slumber party with Jesus interpreting the Kingdom of God?

I could imagine what this event might have been like for hours and in truth the Bible doesn’t tell us much about those faithful forty days. However, we’re just getting started with Acts and there is so much more to explore, so let’s keep going.

In today’s scripture, Jesus leaves us with a pivotal contrasting statement. I love contrasting statements in the Bible, each one provides a rich lesson for us right now.  So when Jesus gives his final instruction before ascending to heaven, you better believe I’m paying attention to what he says.  In his final words Jesus says..

It’s not about time but the Holy Spirit.

Just after, what I imagine was a time where Jesus paints the most beautiful picture of the Kingdom of God, getting the disciples just giddy with excitement.  Where I’m sure he also reminded the disciples he will be coming back again. He gives faithful instruction to bring more abundance instead of folly to our lives.  Did He know we would obsess over the “when?” –  in a week?  A month?  A year? How long would we have to wait for our Savior to return again and to be united in the Kingdom of Heaven? In an attempt to alleviate the “when” dilemma, he provided perfect instruction.

Jesus instructs us to take our minds off what is uncertain and fix our attention to what is assured – the Holy Spirit!

So often, I know that when I take my problems to God, he fixes them, and almost always with an immediate solution.  I’m certain I would gain a whole lot of time in my life if I would be vigilant at implementing this one key spiritual discipline of seeking the Holy Spirit first, instead of wading through a long list of my own remedies.

“You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” {Acts 1:24, ESV}

A little later in this chapter, we are given a beautiful picture of how we are to live this out through the example of the apostles who cast a lot to draft the twelfth man. Casting a lot was considered an act of God under the old law and a way in which they sought the Lord, knower of our hearts, to appoint the twelfth apostle.

In a few days, the Holy Spirit would fall upon them and become the new lot casting resource dwelling within.

Today, if you have asked and received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you have the immeasurable gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you! He is the ultimate direction giving, solution making, resource living in you!  As you read through today’s passage and continue in your study of Acts, be mindful of the Holy Spirit throughout the book. I highly recommending tracing the word “Holy Spirit” in your Bible.  I’ve highlighted the word in yellow throughout my Bible so it’s sure to stand out.

Lord, help us to grow in our awareness and understanding of the inexorable power of your Holy Spirit to move the gospel into all the world.  Give us ears to hear and eyes to see how powerfully you place your truth in our own hearts when we seek you day by day. Thank you Lord, that the whole gospel;  all forgiveness, abundant love, and faithful promises, are for us all!  May the power of your Holy Spirit guide our daily lives all the more as we grow to know and believe your Word! In Christ Jesus, Amen.

Believe it Trust It Live it _ Gold

Does time trump the Holy Spirit in my life?

How can I be more mindful of the Holy Spirit promptings in my life?

Is there an unconscious prejudice stopping the full gospel from invading my life?

If you had forty days with Jesus, what would you imagine that conversation to be like?

What part of the Kingdom would you have questions about, or want to know more about? {Take a little time to dream with God}
